Somehow there is a spooky argument with a girl screaming on this old vhs from the 80's, how could that happen?

I recently purchased a Strawberry Short cake VHS for 1980 for my daughter. At first I thought it was just an old tape with bad audio. Then I could here a dog barking, a woman crying, a man shouting "leave her alone!" and then a woman screaming..... I was a little creeped out at first. My husband listened to the tape and said that somehow it must have just been in play/record mode. Is that possible? Did old VCR's have some kind of external microphones?
