How often and how long may an American visit a Canadian g/f? Both residing in their own countries and homes.?

I have a b/f i have been dating for 3 years. He says he had some issues during the holidays cuz he was here more often and longer. How and where can i find out the legalities of how long and often he can visit me without being searched or brought into customs?
