My husband cut his leg with a grinder about 3 weeks ago?

he lost alot of blood. he had to have stitches inside & out.it was cut almost to the bone.its been 3 weeks & he still has swelling& the drainage is awful. he cant even wear pants for longer than 30 minutes, it gets soaked& he has to change it. my question is is this normal & why so much drainage?its swollen all the way to his toes & he cut it right under his left knee.
